HI, I'M DR. JENNA GRESS SMITH |
HI, I'M DR. SHANNON JEWELL-JONES |
I am a clinically licensed psychologist in Arizona and I particularly enjoy helping people improve their sleep using evidence-based tools such as CBT-I (cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia), and have treated many people who struggle with poor sleep to improve their overall health. I also believe a strong therapeutic relationship is essential - and strive to understand each person's symptoms and sources of resilience.
Throughout my training, I have developed strong therapeutic skills in tailoring various evidence-based psychotherapy approaches to meet the needs of patients with highly complex medical and mental health issues. My clinical expertise lies in psychotherapy that is solidly grounded in research and helps people develop tools, skills, or strategies to decrease their symptoms, both physically and emotionally. Alongside my clinical training, I have published over a dozen articles in scientific journals and attained research grants in health psychology. My publications have examined the prevalence and development of anxiety, depression, and sleep problems across the transition to college, sleep and depression in pregnant women, and postpartum depression in low-income ethnic minority women. Currently, my research focuses on Veterans transitioning from deployments to civilian life and various aspects of their health and well-being. Individual treatment of patients with sleep disorders is not my only passion; I have given many wellness, sleep, and broad health-based seminars for groups who are looking for solutions for their tired and stressed-out employees. I have also partnered with companies as a psychologist and sleep expert to inform their product development and empower them to create resources that are evidence based and thoroughly beneficial. Following research and behavioral sleep medicine training at Stanford University, I graduated with my PhD in clinical psychology from Arizona State University. I received clinical training at Banner Good Samaritan Hospital, St. Joseph's Hospital Family Medicine residency program, and Health South Rehabilitation Hospital. I also started a CBT-I program through the ASU clinical psychology center and oversaw trainees delivering CBT-I at Ironwood Cancer Center. I completed my internship and postdoctoral training at the Phoenix VA Medical Center and was certified in CBT-I through the VA training initiative. I am originally from the East Coast but now call Arizona home and currently live in Ahwatukee with my husband and two daughters. I enjoy running, Pilates, baking, and spending time with my family including our two dogs, Boone and Snickers. |
I am a clinical health psychologist, and I love working with clients to develop strategies to improve their sleep and other pieces in their ‘health puzzle’ such as eating behaviors, self-management of chronic illness, stress, etc. I particularly enjoy working with pregnant people, those in fertility treatment, and new parents as they navigate the unique stressors that come with the perinatal period. As a health psychologist, I have worked with many patients with complex medical and mental health needs, as well as many different personality and learning styles. I also have specialized experience in treating women who struggle with perinatal mood and sleep. I am also happy to work with your medical team to coordinate the best care for you.
I am trained in CBT-I (cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia) and several other treatments with strong research evidence. I also value working one on one with clients to help us get to the bottom of their individual sleep concerns. My approach is not one size fits all. Instead, I take the tools and strategies that research shows us are effective and work with my clients to develop an individualized plan that works for them given their current demands, strengths, and their cultural or social background. My goal is to help people make long-lasting changes, and I have been honored to work with many clients to improve their sleep and wellbeing over my years of clinical practice. Throughout my career, I have received clinical training in a variety of settings including at the ASU Counseling Center, Health South Rehabilitation Hospital, and Banner University Medical Center. I completed my internship and postdoctoral training in Health Psychology at the Phoenix VA Medical Center. I received my doctorate from ASU’s Clinical Psychology program, and am licensed in the state of Arizona. I am originally from the Seattle area, but have lived in Arizona for the past 20 years. Due to my Seattle roots, I feel most at home during monsoon season. I enjoy reading, going for walks or jogs while listening to a good podcast, and spending quality time with my husband and two young kiddos. |
